Microfluidic Engineer

Logo Empresa

Our client is a technology-oriented company developing advanced photonic biosensing technologies for clinical diagnostic applications. The organization combines expertise in integrated photonics, microfluidics, chemistry, engineering, and life sciences to develop innovative in-vitro diagnostic solutions that simplify and accelerate clinical decision-making. Operating in a dynamic, research-driven environment, the company transforms cutting-edge scientific advances into robust commercial products with meaningful impact on healthcare while fostering multidisciplinary collaboration and continuous professional growth.

Mission

The Microfluidics Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of the microfluidic, fluid handling, and thermal management systems that enable next-generation in-vitro diagnostic platforms. Working across the full product development lifecycle, from concept generation and rapid prototyping through system integration, verification, and production transfer, the role will transform complex fluidic concepts into robust, manufacturable, and commercial-grade medical diagnostic solutions.

Responsibilities

Microfluidic System Design

  • Design and develop microfluidic architectures and fluid handling systems for diagnostic applications.
  • Define and optimize flow paths, pressure control, sealing strategies, tubing, valves, pumps, connectors, and fluidic interfaces.
  • Translate assay, experimental, and product requirements into robust microfluidic system designs.

Mechanical and Thermal Development

  • Own the mechanical and fluidic design process from early-stage prototyping through production-ready implementation.
  • Design, build, test, and improve mechanical and electromechanical prototypes supporting fluidic subsystems.
  • Develop thermal management and temperature regulation solutions to ensure stable and repeatable assay performance.

System Integration and Validation

  • Collaborate closely with photonics, electronics, software, chemistry, mechanical engineering, and clinical teams to integrate microfluidic solutions into complete diagnostic instruments.
  • Assemble, characterize, troubleshoot, and validate fluidic and electromechanical prototypes.
  • Analyze experimental data, identify root causes of system failures, and implement practical engineering improvements.

Documentation and Industrialization

  • Produce engineering documentation including CAD models, technical drawings, assembly procedures, test protocols, and validation reports.
  • Support supplier interactions, manufacturing transfer, verification, and product industrialization activities.
  • Contribute to product development within a regulated medical device environment, supporting quality, reliability, and compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, Fluid Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in microfluidic systems, fluid handling, mechanical systems development, product development, or applied R&D.
  • Proven experience owning the design process from early-stage prototyping through production.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, flow control, pressure management, sealing, tubing, valves, pumps, connectors, and fluidic integration.
  • Experience designing, assembling, validating, and troubleshooting mechanical or electromechanical prototypes.
  • Experience developing or optimizing thermal management and temperature control systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
  • Ability to translate product and experimental requirements into mechanical, thermal, and microfluidic specifications.
  • Knowledge of materials selection, tolerances, mechanical interfaces, manufacturability, and system reliability.
  • Experience generating technical documentation, drawings, assembly procedures, test protocols, and validation reports.
  • Ability to analyze experimental data, identify root causes, and propose practical engineering solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment involving mechanics, electronics, photonics, software, chemistry, and clinical applications.
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with microfluidic systems, lab-on-a-chip devices, biosensors, in-vitro diagnostic instruments, medical devices, or analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience with CFD or thermal simulation tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, SolidWorks Flow Simulation, or equivalent.
  • Experience with temperature sensors, PID control, thermal calibration, fluidic automation, or closed-loop control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of electronics, sensors, actuators, embedded systems, or control software.
  • Basic programming or scripting skills using Python, MATLAB, C/C++, LabVIEW, Arduino, or similar technologies.
  • Experience working with external manufacturers, suppliers, machine shops, or contract manufacturing partners.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, medical device development, design transfer, risk analysis, FMEA, verification and validation, or technical documentation for regulated products.
  • Understanding of optical, photonic, or biosensing systems would be considered a strong advantage.
  • Professional proficiency in Spanish would be advantageous.
