Mission

The Photonic Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining advanced characterization methodologies for photonic integrated circuits, ensuring accurate, repeatable, and scalable evaluation of device performance. The role is central to transforming measurement requirements into robust testing workflows, establishing the necessary laboratory and automation infrastructure, and generating reliable data that supports improvements in device design, fabrication processes, integration, and manufacturing performance.

Responsibilities

Characterization Methodology and Test Development

  • Define and develop testing methodologies for the optical, electrical, and material characterization of photonic integrated circuits.

  • Establish automated and scalable test protocols to ensure accurate, repeatable, and efficient measurement processes.

  • Translate device and process requirements into structured characterization plans, measurement sequences, and performance criteria.

Equipment, Automation, and Laboratory Infrastructure

  • Identify, select, acquire, install, and commission characterization equipment required for photonic device testing.

  • Develop and maintain measurement setups incorporating optical spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, photodetectors, interferometric systems, probe stations, and related instrumentation.

  • Coordinate with equipment suppliers and technology partners to implement automated testing workflows and improve characterization throughput.

Characterization, Data Analysis, and Optimization

  • Execute optical, electrical, and material measurements on photonic devices and integrated circuits.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret characterization data to evaluate device performance, identify trends, and detect process or design deviations.

  • Provide data-driven feedback to process, integration, and design engineers to support fabrication optimization and improved device performance.

Troubleshooting, Documentation, and Collaboration

  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues affecting measurement setups, instrumentation, automation, and data quality.

  • Maintain structured documentation of characterization methodologies, test procedures, configurations, results, and technical findings.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D, engineering, and production teams to ensure characterization activities support broader technology development and manufacturing objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, or a closely related technical discipline.

  • Hands-on experience in photonic device characterization, including optical, electrical, or material performance measurements.

  • Practical experience using optical and electronic characterization equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, photodetectors, interferometers, and automated probe stations.

  • Experience with data acquisition, test automation, and analysis environments such as Python, LabVIEW, or comparable tools.

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex measurement and testing challenges.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to develop, document, and maintain robust and reproducible characterization procedures.

  • Clear and effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with wafer-level photonic testing and automated characterization platforms.

  • Experience developing scripts and automation workflows for scalable test execution and increased measurement throughput.

  • Strong understanding of semiconductor and photonic device physics, particularly integrated optics and photonic integrated circuits.

  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis, Design of Experiments methodologies, or structured process-improvement approaches such as Six Sigma.
