Mission

The Optics Engineer will be responsible for designing, assembling, integrating, aligning, characterizing and validating advanced optical systems supporting the development and manufacturing of quantum computing platforms. Working across research, engineering and production environments, the role contributes to prototype development, product introduction, optical characterization and manufacturing readiness while ensuring that optical assemblies consistently achieve demanding performance, quality and reliability requirements.

Responsibilities

Optical Design, Integration and Assembly

  • Design, assemble, align and validate complex high-precision optical subassemblies and complete optical systems.
  • Integrate prototype and proof-of-concept systems incorporating lasers, fiber optics, photodetectors, photomultiplier tubes, SPAD arrays and associated optical components.
  • Support system integration activities throughout development, prototype builds and manufacturing transition.

Optical Characterization and Testing

  • Perform optical metrology and characterization, including measurements of optical power, frequency, phase, polarization, stability and frequency noise.
  • Develop, execute and document optical test plans, characterization procedures and validation activities.
  • Analyze experimental and production data to support engineering decisions, performance optimization and design improvements.

Engineering Support and Continuous Improvement

  • Troubleshoot optical and opto-electronic systems, perform root cause investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Support prototype development, sustaining engineering, engineering change implementation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to mature new optical technologies into production-ready solutions.

Documentation, Quality and Technical Support

  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, work instructions, standard operating procedures, test reports and design records.
  • Provide technical guidance to laboratory technicians on optical alignment, testing methodologies and troubleshooting best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures, engineering standards and quality requirements throughout all engineering activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in optical engineering, photonics or related technical environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, integrating, aligning and testing complex optical systems.
  • Experience with optical metrology, laser characterization and precision opto-mechanical assembly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex optical and opto-electronic systems.
  • Ability to prepare technical documentation, test procedures and engineering reports.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting research and development, prototype builds and new product introduction activities.
  • Knowledge of optical manufacturing processes and production readiness methodologies.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing organizations.
  • Familiarity with engineering change management and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience mentoring technicians and supporting laboratory operations.
  • Exposure to quantum technologies, advanced photonics or precision scientific instrumentation would be considered advantageous.
